Date: Sunday 30th July
Distance: 3km kids event, 5km run/walk, 10km run or half-marathon
The Run Melbourne race starts on St Kilda Road just south of Princes Bridge and weaves around Melbourne, finishing up in Birrarung Marr. Runners follow a route through the city, passing many of the Melbourne’s beautiful green spaces and taking in the sights including Flinders Street Station, The Shrine of Remembrance, the Yarra River and our famous sporting district. Federation Square is used as an assembly area for supporters to locate runners after the race.
Funds from the 2017 Run Melbourne will go towards expanding The Alfred's Trauma Service. As demand for trauma services continues to rise we are undertaking a development that will expand our ability to deal with the increasing number of patients in a purpose built facility dedicated to the early recovery of trauma patients.
We are calling upon our wonderful supporters to sign up to Run Melbourne, the funds raised through this event will help give patients like Annie the best chance of returning to a healthy life.
Annie was critically injured in a car accident, I would like to tell you something of her story briefly through the words of her mother, Sharon:
“One Saturday morning I was helping out at the soccer canteen when I received a phone call from my husband. He told me the police had called him and visited our home. They said Annie had been in a car accident, received severe facial injuries, and been airlifted to The Alfred in a critical condition.
The care Annie received at The Alfred made a dreadful situation as good as it could be. They saved her life. And I believe it gave her a quality of life that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. I am just so grateful to still have Annie in my life.
Accidents change people’s lives. No one thinks it will happen to them – but you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow. We need The Alfred to help save our loved one’s lives. I just think it’s the most worthy cause.”
Annie’s injuries were extensive and after being admitted to the Emergency Department she went onto undertake considerable rehabilitation in our Trauma Unit. The planned upgrades and expansion of the Trauma Service will help us create more beds to treat even more patients. We want to do more for them at the bedside and promote activity earlier which will reduce the time they may spend in hospital, getting them home to their loved one's sooner.
Your efforts and fundraising will help us do this.
We’d love you to be part of Team Alfred. Once registered in the event all you need to do is set up your Everyday Hero page, select The Alfred Foundation as your charity and start your fundraising. You can join Team Alfred here.
